Hardness in drinking water is caused by calcium and magnesium, two naturally occurring, non-toxic minerals. When these minerals are present in substantial amounts, the water is considered hard. Hard water leads to scale buildup, which forms inside plumbing systems when there is an increase in temperature or a decrease in pressure, a condition known as supersaturation. This buildup affects fixtures, faucets, and both tankless and traditional water heaters, reducing their efficiency and lifespan.
